Show jumping and dressage may have their camera-ready moments, but as any rider can tell you, there isn’t much glamor involved with a tough, muddy day on cross-country. Eventer Emily King’s beauty routine is similarly versatile—simple and straightforward enough handle the sport’s long hours and occasionally hostile environments, but always up for a red lipstick moment when called upon.
The Devon, England-based rider, who recently won the CIC2* at Bradbury Castle aboard Walitze F Vejgard (“Zara”), says that despite her busy schedule, there are some routines she refuses to compromise, no matter how many hours of sleep she’s working with. “We have so many ridiculously early mornings and late nights that I feel it is important to stay on top of your beauty regime,” Emily says. “I try to make sure I always quickly cleanse my face before I sleep, even if it is at a crazy hour!”
Here is Emily King’s Beauty Diary.
How would you describe your day-to-day beauty routine?
Thorough but simple. I have such a busy life that I like to not overly complicate things! I like to wash my face every morning (it helps to wake me up also) with Caudalíe cleansing foam, which is super effective for cleansing, but packed with completely natural ingredients so its not harsh on your skin. I love their products and use them regularly.
I then moisturize lightly with Lancôme Hydra Zen, which gives a bright, light, and nourishing cover without clogging pours. I’ll add a touch of Dior’s Diorshow Iconic mascara—which gives a natural long and voluminous look—and I’m away.
In general, I make sure I drink heaps of water all day… it can be easy to forget when you’re busy riding from dawn until dusk, but I feel it’s super important to keep you and your skin feeling fresh. Every so often, I’ll also use Bobbi Brown ‘Instant Detox’ face mask—it’s such a great deep cleanser and purifies without stripping the skin.
Do you have any tricks from going straight from the barn or show out with friends?
In that case, I’ll tend to add a touch of Lancôme face powder (to hide the look of riding in the heat for five hours!), quickly brush my hair, add a touch of Argan Oil to the ends, and tie up! Hat hair is an inevitably unavoidable part of being a female rider, so an on-tap supply of dry shampoo is a must (or always keep a cap in your rucksack!).
What about for a night out on the town?
For a night out, I cleanse and moisturize the same, again keeping it simple, but I’ll add a little more make up. I like to use Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk foundation, which gives an even, natural coverage; a little brow pencil; brown eyeliner on the top of my lid; and then the same Dior Mascara. Plus a touch of Dior’s Diorific lippy in Dolce Vita. I also like Dior Addict Lip Maximizer, which is a great lip gloss with an added pluming affect.
I tend to always wear my hair down and I’m lucky that naturally it’s voluminous and wavy and very easy to tame! I usually just wash, add a touch a oil, then quickly blow dry.
Can you talk about some of your favorite hair products?
1. OGX Argan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner—they’re just amazingly nourishing for your hair.
2. Lee Stafford Argan Oil, which I always apply pre-blow drying. It’s great for keeping your ends conditioned and silky.
3. Lee Stafford Deep Nourishing Treatment. It’s a super hair mask for restoring condition.
