If you’re a fan of show jumping then you’re probably familiar with Laura Kraut and her iconic mount, Cedric. The Holsteiner gelding (Chambertin 3 x Carolus I), will officially be retiring today in Wellington, Florida at the age of 19. Together, Cedric and Laura have won countless grand prixs and were part of the gold medal-winning U.S. team at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
In their time together the pair has ridden around the world, competing on Nations Cup teams at locations such as Aachen, Rotterdam, Rome, and Wellington. While it would be nearly impossible to mention every victory that Cedric has achieved in his nearly two decades of life, here are three of our favorite (watchable!) wins to date:
1. GCT Valkenswaard, Netherlands
On August 13, 2010, Laura and Cedric rode to victory in the Global Champions Tour grand prix at Valkenswaard. They jumped a total of three clear rounds that day, and Laura was the first rider in the pack to go clear. As if that isn’t impressive enough, it was Laura’s second win of the day following an earlier victory with Unique. Watch her round with Cedric here:
2. GCT Wiesbaden, Germany
Laura and Cedric also won the 1.60 Global Championships Tour on May 18, 2013, winning by a slight two-tenths of a second and narrowly beating out Edwina Tops-Alexander. Watch it here:
3) Wellington, United States
Cedric and Laura took first place on their home turf in the CSI5* Grand Prix in Wellington in March, 2011. Naturally, Kraut was very pleased with this win, but afterward reflected that her grey teammate did not seem himself in the first round. Cedric, however, made an impressive comeback in the jump-off:
Cedric will be honored and officially retired at a ceremony tonight before the Nations Cup Competition in Wellington.
