There were plenty of popular riders this winter at the 2017 FEI World Cup Dressage Finals in Omaha, but few earned the crowd's affection more quickly than the endlessly enthusiastic Maria Florencia Manfredi.
As the first Argentinian to receive an invitation to compete at FEI World Cup Dressage Finals, Maria's acceptence came on the heels of her victory with the 12-year-old Argentinan-bred gelding, Bandurria Kacero, in the Adequan Global Dressage Festival World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle in Wellington, Florida on March 24th. Not only did the win ensure their ticket to Omaha, it was also Maria's first victory outside of her home country and a new personal best, with a score of 72.525%.
In Omaha, Manfredi scored 66.50% in the Grand Prix test, which put her into 14th position overnight. In Freestyle, Manfredi delighted the crowds with Bandurria Kacero's dramatic movements and a performance that included traditional Argentian tango music. Though they faced tough competition from a top tier global field—including Germany’s Isabell Werth, who would go on to win her third World Cup title—Manfredi finished on 70.696%, ending her World Cup debut in 13th place overall.
“I feel incredible… the whole day, I was very relaxed," she said. "The horse was happy, we had one or two mistakes, but I’m really having the week of my life.”
