The drama at the 2017 European Eventing Championships in Strzegom, Poland is heating up as the lead position continues to vacillate after two days of competition.

Day one saw three-time champions Team Germany putting an exclamation mark on their campaign for yet another title, earning a record team score of 87.7 penalties after the Dressage phase. Now, at the conclusion of Saturday’s cross-country event, Germany’s foothold has begun to slip as Great Britain—previously sitting behind France in third—surged ahead to take over the top spot.

The current team leaders had a rather tough start. Oliver Townend had two run-outs with Cooley SRS, but managed to complete his round as one of the fastest times on course with only 1.2 time penalties. Team newcomer Ros Canter aboard Allstar B, Kristina Cook on Billy the Red, and anchorwoman Nicola Wilson with Bulana, clinched their rise in the ranks with three spectacular clear rounds.

Despite a 20-penalty score from Julia Krajewski, Germany still isn’t out of the running, and currently sits in second place with Sunday’s jumping phase still to come. More notable finishes during cross-country include Team Sweden, currently in third, which was the only nation to produce four clear rounds.

Individually, Germany’s Ingrid Klimke with Horseware Hale Bob and triple European champion Michael Jung aboard fischerRocana FST are in individual gold and silver medal positions, with Sweden’s Sara Algotsson Ostholt and Reality 39 in third.

The jumping finale of the 2017 European Eventing Championships starts tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. CEST,  with livestreaming available at
