Sometimes future champions arrive on the scene all at once, with plenty of fanfare. Other times, they sneak in wearing garters and oversized bows.
After making her walk/trot debut at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida last winter, 7-year-old Brianne Beerbaum is back in the crossrail ring and taking names on what might be the most adorable mini-Shutterfly ever.
As the youngest member of Germany’s Beerbaum showjumping dynasty, Brianne has plenty of family members to turn to for advice. Mom Meredith laid the foundation, becoming the first woman ever to ride on a German show jumping team, the first woman to reach the World #1 spot on the show jumping rankings list, and the first woman ever to win the FEI World Cup Final three times aboard the legendary Shutterfly. Just last weekend during WEF 2, Meredith also rode Calle 67 to the top of the pack in the Saturday Night Lights $70,000 Marshall & Sterling Grand Prix CSI2*.
Dad Markus, who himself has won team gold at the European Championships and the World Equestrian Games in Rome in 1997 and 1998, respectively, is also considered one of the finest coaches in the sport, having trained not only his wife Meredith but also 2016 Rio Olympic team silver medalist Lucy Davis, and up-and-coming U.S. rider Chloe Reid, among many others.
Plus, in a pinch, Brianne also has her five-time Olympic medalist Uncle Ludger, which, as fall-back plans go, could certainly be worse.
After a blue ribbon in the crossrails class this weekend, though, it’s clear Brianne Beerbaum has this thing well in hand. As an international horseshow veteran for most of her young life, she’s even taken or a turn or two coaching, herself, when Meredith was returning to the sport after an injury last year:
The bottom line? If Brianne has inherited her family’s love for the sport—and early signs indicate she has—there’s little doubt we’ll be seeing much more of her in the winner’s circle in years to come. Congratulations to Brianne and #TeamBeerbaum!
