‘Came…saw…conquered…’ might be the best phrase to sum up Team USA’s participation last weekend in the fourth leg of the Dressage Nations Cup series, this time at the CDIO5* in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Helmed by the FEI World Cup Finals individual silver and Rio Olympic team bronze medal-winning duo of Laura Graves and Verdades (aka “Diddy”)—who won Thursday’s Grand Prix on a score of 79.46 percent—Chef D’Equipe Robert Dover’s team rose to the occasion in a hotly contested competition. The winning nation was determined by the best three scores from the Grand Prix, the best two scores from the Grand Prix Special, and the best score from the Grand Prix Freestyle.
Teammate Olivia LaGoy-Weltz & Lonoir placed third in Thursday’s Grand Prix with 74.58 percent, while Kasey Perry-Glass & Goerklintgaards Dublet also took third place in the Grand Prix Special competition with 71.784 percent (Team USA rider Dawn White-O’Connor & Legolas 92 were eliminated due to unevenness). It all came down to the Grand Prix Freestyle, and once again, it was Graves and Diddy who sealed the deal, winning the class with an 80.98 percent and securing Team USA’s Nations Cup victory over seven other countries, including Switzerland and Germany.
