After Anne Kursinski shared her veritable “Anne-isms” on Day One of the 2017 GHM Horsemastership Session in Wellington, FL, fellow Team USA Olympic and World Championship veteran Beezie Madden took over coaching duties on Friday, January 6th. Day Two focused on gymnastic jumping.

The 12 young riders who have earned a spot to participate in this year’s GHM Horsemastership put on a riding clinic of their own, building upon the prior day’s flatwork fundamentals, to Friday’s warmup over poles, which led into gymnastic jumping over obstacles that included three different kinds of water obstacles.

Madden is a master at putting the pieces together: over the course of the two, 90-minute sessions (six riders in each session), she led the way through an impressive progression of exercises that each young rider aced. Read on for Beezie’s building blocks:

1. If you can…

Adjust your canter to fit three, five, or six strides between three poles set 45 feet apart,

Then you can…

Jump a gymnastic of four fences (oxer, vertical, vertical, oxer) set four, two, and three strides apart.

2. If you can…

Jump a small blue tarp underneath the square oxer at the beginning of the gymnastic,

Then you can…

Give your horse a confident, forward ride to a liverpool oxer set as a single obstacle.

3. If you can…

Find accurate distances over all three, low verticals on a curve,

Then you can…

Jump down a new gymnastic on the outside of the arena (oxer, vertical, vertical, oxer) set three, two, and one strides apart, and make an immediate turn to jump the single liverpool oxer on the curve.

4. If you can…

Jump a wide-open water with a pole on the long side of the arena,

Then you can…

Put everything together and jump the outside gymnastic, ride an immediate turn to jump the single liverpool oxer on the curve, ride another immediate turn to jump the open water with the pole, and ride another bending line to find accurate distances over all three, low verticals on a curve.
